GPS Tracking Device - Global Positioning Systems

GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System. So you could say that a GPS device acts as a revolutionary improvement to the good old compass. A GPS device makes use of satellites which broadcast exact timing signals to the GPS receiver. This allows the GPS device to pinpoint its location by longitude, latitude and altitude, regardless of where you are or what the weather conditions are.

This useful device has become very important to those navigating by land, sea or air. GPS Global Positioning Systemsdevices have been developed for cars, boats and almost any other vehicle. Car navigation GPS devices or even a motorcycle mounted GPS, allows you to navigate the streets of unfamiliar cities by following a digital map created with the use of GPS. A GPS tracking device proves useful on the seas not only to those sailing for recreation or sport, but also to keen fisherman. Now fisherman can track down fish with a GPS fish finder. Even athletes or adventure enthusiasts such as audax (long distance) or touring cyclists find the device to be very handy indeed. Golfers can make use of a golf GPS, which allows you to preview golf courses and analyse them; noting shot distances and potential difficulties like bunkers or trees.

The benefits of the GPS reach into the spheres of science and geography too. The precision information of a GPS locator makes the GPS an indispensable tool for drawing maps and surveying land. Scientists can use the GPS to study earthquakes and other natural phenomena. This technological innovation may help to prevent the tragic loss of human life which is usually associated with natural catastrophes like hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes.

If you are interested in tracing the history and development of the GPS, it may not surprise you that the system was indeed developed by the US Defence Department. Initially the Americans named it the “NAVSTAR (Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging) GPS.” The first GPS satellite was launched in an experimental effort in 1978, and since then many more have been launched, making for a collection of more than two dozen GPS satellites orbiting the Earth. The maintenance of these special GPS satellites is of course very expensive, but the use of the GPS has become freely available to the public, thanks to the Americans believing in the general good which the system will offer humanity.

2005 saw the additional launching of new improved GPS satellites, offering new features to the user and improving the accuracy and dependability of information received by the devices. The new satellites add additional signals for public use, and in the future more of these can be expected.

Used for safety, a GPS current interrupter will sense if there is trouble with an electric current and shut it off. The device senses when some of the current flowing out one side of an electric outlet isn't returning through the other side of that outlet. The only way such an imbalance can occur is if some current is returning to the electric company through the ground. Because that accidental current path might include your body, the interrupter shuts off current as soon as it senses trouble.

GPS can also be used to track people, for example criminals who are under house arrest. They would be fitted with a GPS tracking ankle device, which fits snuggly around the ankle and is tamper resistant.
