Computer Network Management Tools - What is a Network?

Now also referred to as GooTube, after being bought out for a fortune by Google ($1.65 billion!), YouTube was founded in February 2005. It is a popular free video sharing website which lets users upload, view and share video clips. Videos can be rated; the average rating and the number of times a video has been watched are both published. This is the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience.

YouTube was based in San Bruno where three former employees of PayPal founded the service that utilises Adobe Flash technology to display video.

Funding was received from Sequoia Capital and YouTube was officially launched in December 2005. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen proceeded to become the first members of the YouTube management team and currently serve as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer respectively.

The wide variety of site content includes movie and TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur videoblogging and short original videos. Everyone can watch videos on YouTube. You can see first-hand accounts of current events, find videos about your hobbies and interests, and discover the quirky and unusual. YouTube means anyone can be a broadcaster!

YouTube was named “Invention of the Year” by TIME magazine in 2006. Shortly thereafter Google bought out the company, which now has 67 employees. It is one of the most talked-about acquisitions to date.

YouTube has struck numerous partnership deals with content providers such as CBS, BBC, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, NBA, The Sundance Channel and many more.
