dotmobi

Also known as DotMobi, this is a top-level domain approved by ICANN and managed by the mTLD global registry dedicated to delivering the Internet to mobile devices via the Mobile Web.

DotMobi is financially backed by a consortium of companies including the most prominent mobile and Internet players in the world, such as Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, Vodafone, GSM Association, Hutchinson, Orascom Telecom, Syniverse, T-mobile, T-Mobile, Telefónica Móviles, and Telecom Italia Mobile.

This is the first and only top-level domain (TLD) dedicated exclusively to delivering Internet content to mobile devices, such as cell phones and PDAs. .mobi is created with the specific purpose of directing mobile Internet users to Web sites that are constructed to work particularly well on handsets. All Webs sites that use the .mobi domain must be optimised for easy viewing on mobile devices. If a Web site name ends in .mobi, the user can trust that the site is created for viewing on a mobile device.

Worldwide, there are more digital mobile phones than televisions and PCs combined. According to recent research, more than half of mobile handset are less than a year old, with most having full Internet capabilities. In emerging markets where fixed line communications are scarce, analysts predict wireless will be the communication channel of choice. That’s where .mobi comes in, making the mobile device as useful as a PC for browsing and data services, but far more portable. .mobi provides the critical link between the mobile operator, Internet services and the users to make their mbile devices the Internet and communication tool of choice. What more reason do you need to get a .mobi domain?

If you are a member of GSMa or CTIA you may register your Trademark as a .mobi domain during a Limited Industry registration period from May 22, 2006 to May 27, 2006. If you are the holder of a recognised Trademark you can register your Trademark as a .mobi domain name during a Sunrise Registration period that began in June 2006. Members of the general public may start registering their .mobi domain names at the beginning of the Landrush Registration Period that begins on Monday August 28th. From the 17th May onwards Hostway will be accepting pre-registrations covering all 3 of these phases.
